On-time performance (OTP) continued to improve in February for North American carriers after recovering in January from a December decline, according to Cirium, an aviation analytics company.
Overall, OTP in February for the region’s carriers was up 2.8 percentage points month over month to 76%. Leading the way was Alaska Airlines at 85.7%, followed by United Airlines (83.4%) and Delta Air Lines (82.5%).
Seven of the 10 reporting carriers saw better results in February, with Air Canada increasing the most from January — 9.1 percentage points, to 65.5%, though it still came in last for the region. Southwest Airlines declined 3.1 percent from January, Spirit Airlines was down 2.3 percentage points, and JetBlue’s OTP fell by 0.4 percentage points.
United and Delta each made the February global list of on-time airlines in seventh and eighth place, respectively. (Alaska doesn’t qualify for the global list because it doesn’t serve at least four of Cirium’s global regions.) Aeromexico led the category again at 91.6%.
Southwest’s February flight completion factor was 99.2%. It was the second straight month as the only North American carrier with a completion factor above 99%. Alaska followed at 98.8%, with United at 98.2%.
The number of North American flights canceled in February was 18,080, compared with 34,161 in January. It was the second month in a row that North America had the highest number of cancellations of all the reporting regions.
