Cancellations were down from same month in 2024
In January, US carriers operated nearly 580,300 domestic flights, an increase of 3.6% year over year, according to the latest U.S. Department of Transportation Air Travel Consumer Report. That figure, however, was down from nearly 627,400 flights operated in December 2024.
Canceled flights were 3.1% of the total, down from 3.8% in January 2024, but higher than the 0.7% of flights canceled in December of last year. The carriers in January 2025 with the lowest rates of canceled flights were Allegiant Air (1.3%), Alaska Airlines Network (1.4%) and JetBlue (1.8%). Networks include branded codeshare partners.
Carriers in January with the highest rates of canceled flights were American Airlines Network (4.5%), Spirit (3.3%) and Southwest Airlines (2.9%).
In January, DOT received nearly 7,600 submissions — complaints, inquiries and opinions — which increased from the more than 6,900 received a year prior. US carriers accounted for 71% of those submissions, with foreign carriers at nearly 26% and travel agents at 2%. The 10 largest reporting US carriers saw their submissions increase nearly 19% year over year to 5,175.
