The competition for high end, VIP customers in chauffeured executive transportation has heated up considerably with the recent acquisition of global black car company Blacklane by rideshare giant Uber. Just as rideshare once challenged legacy taxicab service, rideshare seems now to be challenging chauffeured transportation services.
Many in the travel industry are seeing this as a move, not only to expand market share but also perhaps to polish the tarnished image of transportation network companies, which increasingly are the subject of legal issues involving drivers’ alleged unlawful behavior toward passengers.
The back story starts more than a hundred years ago. The iconic image of a smartly uniformed chauffeur holding the door of a sleek black limousine for a VIP client has always spoken volumes about first-class service that delivers privacy and luxury. As witnessed in the last two decades, advances in communications technology, especially smartphones and apps, have upended almost every aspect of day to day life, including the operations of button-down, traditional chauffeured transportation companies.
However, according to Brett Barenholtz, CEO of worldwide Boston Car Service, black car service still delivers a level of professionalism, consistency and accountability that is difficult to replicate in an on-demand marketplace model. “The advantage begins with professionally vetted chauffeurs, extends through vehicle quality and safety standards, and is reinforced by an operational infrastructure built around duty of care. For corporate travelers, executives, VIPs and clients where the transportation experience matters, black car service provides confidence that every aspect of the journey is being managed to a consistent standard.”
Joe Gulino, president of GEM Worldwide Ground Transportation, notes that for 50 years his company has been trusted to move executives, board members and high-profile guests when the “margin for error is zero.” While options for ground transportation have multiplied in that time, he points out that the expectations around executive travel have not. “When the stakes are high, travelers and the people who book them need certainty, accountability and a partner who is answerable for the outcome – not just a car that shows up,” Gulino says.
Staying Ahead of Tech
“While technology platforms continue to expand their offerings into premium transportation, it is important to recognize that not all transportation solutions are created equal,” cautions Rick Versace, CEO of A1A Airport and Limousine Service. “As business travel continues to evolve, travel managers are increasingly being asked to balance convenience, visibility, cost control and most importantly, traveler safety.”
Versace notes that technology has undoubtedly improved transportation, but technology by itself does not create excellence. “Real-time tracking, mobile booking, integrated reporting and traveler visibility are valuable tools. However, technology should enhance service, not replace professionalism.” Versace maintains true differentiation lies with the people, processes, training, accountability and safety culture behind the service. “The chauffeured executive transportation industry places a premium on safety, and most companies follow the ‘Platinum Safety Program’ protocol which involves constant and rigorous training.”
Versace explains that the concept of duty of care did not originate in the technology sector. It was “pioneered, refined and operationalized by the professional chauffeured transportation industry decades ago. For executive travel, VIP movements, client hospitality and mission-critical transportation, chauffeured executive transportation remains the benchmark against which all other services should be measured.”
Travel managers increasingly recognize executive transportation is not merely about moving people from Point A to Point B. “It is about protecting travelers, managing risk, safeguarding corporate reputation and delivering a consistent experience every time,” Versace says. “For organizations serious about duty of care, executive transportation is not a luxury. It is a strategic business decision.”
Barenholtz says operators maintain a competitive advantage through professionally trained chauffeurs, consistently maintained vehicles, comprehensive safety and duty-of-care standards, plus a level of personalized service designed specifically for executive travel. “When reliability, privacy, accountability and traveler experience matter most, black car service continues to set the standard.”
Although the industry has always upheld those standards, Gulino says, “what has changed is how we manage risk and prove it. Corporate travel programs are under real pressure to protect their people while limiting organizational exposure, and that is where professional operators have invested most.”
For example, Gulino points out that GEM provides centralized oversight, real-time trip monitoring, 24/7 operational support, documented safety protocols and a clear chain of accountability from booking to drop-off. “The visibility and control that travel managers now expect from technology, we deliver – without asking them to trade away the safety and discretion only a vetted, professional operator can guarantee. Those two things were never meant to be a choice,” Gulino explains.
“There are situations where that distinction is not a preference but a requirement: Airport transfers for senior leadership, multi-stop roadshows, investor meetings, client entertainment and transportation for guests who are vulnerable, high-profile or have special needs. In each of these, the real question is not what is fastest to summon. It is who is responsible when something goes wrong. At GEM, our clients are not buying a ride. They are investing in a partner who protects their travelers and their brand.”
According to Vercace, risk management and duty of care is where the distinction between chauffeured executive transportation and rideshare becomes most important.
“Travel managers today face increasing scrutiny regarding traveler safety and corporate liability. They and the company’s exposure is exponentially higher using rideshare, the countless number of lawsuits are testimony to that fact. Whether transporting a Fortune 500 executive, a healthcare professional, an unaccompanied traveler, a celebrity or a vulnerable passenger with special needs, risk mitigation cannot be an afterthought,” he says.
The Hands on the Wheel
The single greatest differentiator between a professional chauffeur and the individual behind the wheel of an app-based ride is confidence in the driver. Accountability is key. “Professional chauffeurs undergo extensive background screening, motor vehicle record reviews, drug and alcohol testing where required, customer service training, defensive driving instruction and ongoing performance evaluations. Their careers depend upon maintaining a professional standard of conduct and safety. In the high touch world of executive transportation, chauffeurs are seen in person by the ground transportation company on daily basis.”
In contrast, many network transportation networks rely on independent contractor drivers who are loosely vetted and may lack rigorous background checks. “All these platforms have lower standards than professional chauffeurs, limited training requirements, and high driver turnover which lead to consistently lower service levels,” Versace says.
“For travel managers responsible for senior executives, board members, international guests and high-value clients, knowing who is behind the wheel matters. A professional chauffeur is not simply a driver; they are a trained transportation professional entrusted with representing a client’s brand, protecting a passenger’s safety, and executing a transportation assignment flawlessly.”
At Boston Car, Barenholtz explains the key differentiator is the professional chauffeur. “These are not simply drivers; they are trained hospitality professionals selected through rigorous vetting, comprehensive background checks and ongoing training in both defensive driving and Five-Star service. They understand executive travel, anticipate client needs, respect privacy and know when to engage and when to provide quiet space. This combination of technical skill, professionalism and emotional intelligence creates a level of confidence and predictability that business travelers value.”
When the stakes are higher, whether it’s transporting executives, high-value clients, vulnerable travelers or guests with special requirements, Barenholtz says, “Risk management becomes a critical consideration.”
Black car operators provide an institutionalized approach to duty of care through comprehensive background screening, ongoing safety training, vehicle inspections, compliance oversight and operational accountability. “There is an entire organization standing behind every trip, creating a clear chain of responsibility and reducing uncertainty for both travelers and travel managers.”
Gulino agrees. “At GEM, that certainty begins with the person behind the wheel.” He says chauffeurs are screened, background-checked, trained and continually evaluated career professionals who understand discretion and duty of care. “They are not anonymous contractors matched by an algorithm. For a senior executive, a high-profile guest or a traveler who needs special accommodation, knowing exactly who is providing the service – and a dispatcher and management team that stand behind every trip – is peace of mind an on-demand model cannot replicate.”
Road-worthy Plus
Moreover, the vehicle carries the same accountability, he says. “We hold our fleet to maintenance, inspection and commercial insurance standards a personal car is never measured against. A client traveling to a board meeting, an investor presentation or a major event knows the vehicle meeting them will reflect the seriousness of the occasion – every time.”
In addition, professional chauffeured transportation companies provide real-time trip monitoring, driver identification and verification, GPS vehicle tracking, passenger manifest controls, emergency response protocols, dispatch oversight, flight tracking and proactive service recovery. “These safeguards create layers of protection that help organizations fulfill their duty of care obligations,” Versace says.
“When transportation is viewed through a risk-management lens rather than simply a mobility lens, the value proposition of chauffeured executive transportation becomes clear.”
Professional chauffeured transportation companies invest millions of dollars annually in fleet acquisition, preventive maintenance, safety inspections, telematics systems, vehicle tracking and regulatory compliance. Vehicles are maintained to commercial transportation standards and routinely inspected to ensure safety, cleanliness and reliability.
“Executive travelers expect more than transportation,” Versace says. “They expect a consistent environment conducive to productivity, privacy and comfort. When a CEO, government official, investment banker, attorney or international guest enters a professionally chauffeured vehicle, there is confidence that the vehicle will be properly maintained, appropriately insured, professionally presented and ready to perform.”
Confidence in the vehicles is of utmost importance, says Barenholtz. He explains that the fleets are commercially insured, properly licensed and held to consistent standards of safety, cleanliness and mechanical integrity. “Unlike vehicles that may vary significantly from trip to trip, black car fleets are purpose-equipped for executive transportation, often including amenities such as WiFi, privacy controls and productivity-focused features. Travelers know what to expect every time they step into the vehicle.”
Vercace concludes, “The question should not be ‘What is the cheapest ride?’ The question should be ‘What is the safest, most reliable, and most defensible transportation solution for this traveler?’”
While on-demand transportation serves an important role for routine travel needs, Barenholtz notes that black car service remains the preferred choice when reliability, professionalism, privacy and consistency are essential. “Executive travel often leaves no margin for uncertainty,” he advises. “A traveler heading to a board meeting, client presentation, airport transfer or major corporate event needs confidence that the vehicle will arrive on time, that service standards will be met, and that personal preferences will be anticipated. In these situations, transportation is not simply about getting from one location to another – it is an extension of the organization’s brand, duty of care and commitment to service excellence.”
Vercace says, “Since most legitimate transportation options, both rideshare and chauffeured transportation, include customer facing and driver facing apps, it is becoming increasingly difficult to know which is the better option.” He acknowledges that there is a time and a place for rideshare. “These services have become a useful option for many, routine on-demand trips and have replaced yellow cabs with their mobile summons ability. Still, there remain numerous situations where professional chauffeured service is the superior choice.”
Among the high-profile circumstances where the reliability, duty of care, service and luxury of chauffeured executive transportation offer the greatest benefits:
• Executive Transportation – Senior leadership requires discretion, reliability and professionalism. A missed airport pickup or service failure can have significant business consequences.
• Corporate Events and Roadshows – Complex itineraries involving multiple stops, multiple passengers and changing schedules require dedicated transportation professionals and dispatch support.
• VIP and Client Hospitality – First impressions matter. Professional chauffeurs understand protocol, presentation and service standards that reflect positively on the organization being represented.
• International Travelers – Visitors unfamiliar with local transportation systems often benefit from meet-and-greet services, multilingual support and dedicated assistance.
•. Special Needs and Vulnerable Travelers – Passengers requiring additional assistance, security awareness or specialized accommodations benefit from the training and oversight provided by professional transportation companies.
• High-Profile Events – Major conventions, sporting events, political gatherings and corporate meetings demand transportation partners capable of scaling operations while maintaining service consistency.
