Carrier cites economic uncertainty and reduced government-related travel
Alaska Airlines will end service between Washington Dulles airport and both San Francisco and Los Angeles on Aug. 20 because of a reduction in demand, according to multiple news reports. The routes were part of the network of Virgin America, which Alaska acquired in 2016.
The carrier will continue to offer flights between Washington Dulles and both Seattle and San Diego. It also connects Reagan National Airport in Washington DC with Seattle, Portland (Ore.), San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego. A spokesperson for the airline said the downward trend in demand might be connected to economic uncertainty and a decrease in government-related travel.
Also in August, Alaska will stop flying between Chicago O’Hare and San Francisco but will continue to fly from Chicago to Seattle, Portland and Anchorage. Finally, the airline is not planning to resume service between Los Angeles and Nassau, Bahamas, this winter. That route was launched in 2023.
