The Transportation Security Administration has begun a trial of One Stop Security, a new program that will eliminate secondary passenger and baggage screenings for international travelers arriving into the US.

After clearing US customs right at the arrival gate, eligible travelers will no longer be required pass through a second TSA screening, and checked bags are automatically transferred to connecting flights. That means passengers will not have to reclaim and recheck their bags to their final domestic destinations.

The congressionally authorized pilot program is a collaboration between TSA, US Customs and Border Protection, the UK’s Department for Transport, Delta and American.

One Stop Security was launched last week on American Airlines flights from London Heathrow to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. Delta Air Lines is set to launch a similar pilot for passengers arriving in Atlanta from London by the end of July.

Both airlines have been offering a version on outbound routes to Heathrow from the two US gateways since February. Passengers on select Delta or SkyTeam partner Virgin Atlantic flights connecting through Heathrow Terminal 3 or 5 could go directly to their next flights without additional security screening or baggage recheck.

Also since February, a similar program allows outbound connecting passengers on certain flights operated by American Airlines and Oneworld partner British Airways from DFW to Heathrow Terminal 3 or 5 to bypass the security and baggage rechecks.

Streamlining the process and reducing bottlenecks for international travelers making connections within the United States would mean eliminating long lines and redundant security checks. If successful, the program could affect millions of international arrivals.

According to deputy administrator Adam Stahl, TSA and its partners plan to conduct rigorous threat screening and monitoring and adjust security assessments for that last point of departure foreign airport to make ensure a commensurate level of security.

“It really is a commonsense security approach for us to streamline security from abroad to the United States,” Stahl said.

“One Stop Security is a smart, long-overdue step toward modernizing the travel experience, eliminating redundant screening, cutting connection times and unlocking more international air service,” said US Travel president and CEO Geoff Freeman. “Paired with stronger airport staffing, long-awaited air traffic control upgrades and the end of the shoe removal rule, this is real progress toward a world-class travel system just in time for America 250, the 2026 World Cup and the 2028 Olympics.”
