May 2008:Tel Aviv is Israel's commercial and cultural center and the largest city in the metropolitan area known as Gush Dan. Along with Jaffa (Yafo, an old Arab port), it constitutes a 20 square-mile municipality on the Mediterranean coast. Tel Aviv was founded in 1909 and hence, contains no holy sites. Because Jerusalem is not recognized by many countries as the capital of Israel, most foreign countries maintain their embassies in Tel Aviv.
