Businesses are likely to see a significant surge in one-day business trips, indicating a reconsideration of how companies view travel and work, according to a report from Enterprise Mobility. A recent indicator was noted in 2023 independent research conducted by IPSOS, on behalf of Enterprise Mobility, that predicted an increase in one day business trips in the upcoming year. IPSOS surveyed business travelers and decision makers from the US, UK and Germany. Internal data from Enterprise Mobility shows an estimated 11% increase in one-day business trips year over year.

Mike Guadagnoli, vice president, business rental sales - global operations for Enterprise Mobility, noted that these quick-turnaround trips allow for essential face-to-face engagements without extended time away. “According to our research,” he said, “these shorter trips may align well with the flexible work models employees are increasingly adopting.”

Despite the availability of virtual tools such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom, most decision makers surveyed — 72 % — still don’t see remote meetings as a complete substitute for travel or in-person meetings. Similarly, 67% of employees agree business travel expands networks and re-energizes the business. These statistics highlight the value of in-person meetings, said the report, which are more effective for certain types of business activities such as brainstorming sessions, team building or any situation where body language is crucial for understanding. As with any business travel decision, the cost of one-day business travel must be weighed against the benefits.

In an economic climate with ongoing inflationary pressures, said the report, managing travel costs becomes even more important. One potential area of savings is travel-related expenses for these shorter trips. Traditional models that reimburse employees for mileage can be expensive.

A cost-effective transportation alternative gaining traction as a substitute for mileage reimbursement, according to the research, is renting a car for business-related travel –– particularly for trips of up to 100 miles. This approach can be more cost-effective, providing budget-friendly solutions for companies while also easing the maintenance and depreciation concerns associated with using personal vehicles. Also, renting often gives employees access to newer, more fuel-efficient vehicles or electric vehicles, which may align with corporate sustainability goals.
