In his first public comments since becoming CEO of Marriott a week ago, Tony Capuano took a strong stand against racism, focusing on the proliferation of hate crimes against Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders in the US. Noting a “fracturing” in American society on many issues, Capuano said that since the pandemic began, there has been a dramatic increase in verbal harassment, physical assaults, hate speech, mistreatment and violence against Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders in this country. “It must stop now,” said Capuano, adding, “ Racism and bigotry cannot be tolerated.” Capuano said he wanted to reiterate that Marriott International stands against racism, believing that all people deserve to be treated with dignity and respected for their humanity and the distinct qualities that make them unique. He said all are welcome at the company’s 7,600 hotels around the world, including people of every race. He said the company is redoubling its “welcome all” efforts by working with the Asia Society to support its efforts to build solidarity and by working to advance hotel ownership among Asian-Americans. Referring to the death of George Floyd last year, Capuano concluded that the country must bond together — including corporations, civil rights and social justice originations, elected officials and ordinary people. “Hand in hand,” he said, “we can make real change and stop hate.”
