The European Commission has approved the Belgian state aid measure for Brussels Airlines. Last month, the carrier announced that it had reached an agreement with the Belgian government and Lufthansa to secure the future of the carrier. The stabilization package of $544 million – $343 million from the Belgian government and $201 million from Lufthansa – covers in part the losses incurred by Brussels Airlines due to the pandemic crisis and secures at the same time tens of thousands of direct and indirect jobs that are linked to the activities of Brussels Airlines. Thanks to the package, according to a statement, the airline can finance its turnaround plan and create a long-term and structurally profitable future. Dieter Vranckx, CEO of Brussels Airlines, said that the carrier can now focus on timely implementation of its turnaround plan, Reboot Plus, which will create a “strong and competitive Brussels with long-term perspectives.”
