Delta Air Lines Basic Economy  passengers will be able to make changes to their flights without paying fees through Dec. 31, according to a statement from CEO Ed Bastian. The executive also announced that,  in response to a record number of calls, the carrier is bringing back hundreds of Delta alumni to alleviate  telephone wait times and is hiring 1,300 specialists who will be trained and ready to serve customers by September. Delta, he said, is also adding a new phone platform that automatically equips agents with even more details about a passenger’s travel “so they can address your questions efficiently and get you on your way.” In total, said Bastian, the airline is hiring more than 5,000 people, including 3,000 more in airport customer service and other operational areas. And as of now, said Bastian, members of SkyMiles with Medallion status will retain that status through Jan. 31, 2023, along with any global and regional upgrade certificates they may have.
