China Eastern Airlines is aiming to become the world’s first airline to use facial recognition rather than checking passports. The system would be used from ticket purchase to boarding at the new Beijing Daxing International Airport, set to open at the end of September. Domestic route passengers will be able to pick up their tickets and baggage tags and go through security by just using facial recognition. Staff will use augmented reality glasses to verify travelers’ identities. The system is powered by fifth-generation wireless networks. Those who wish to participate need to register first at check-in kiosks or via the airline's mobile app. The Shanghai-based airline will use the app to inform passengers about their departure gates, timing, weather and other travel-related details. It will also provide clients with electronic luggage tags so they can use the app to track their luggage.
