According to an update from the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) almost six months after the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, 4 of 10 hotel employees are still not working; almost two-thirds of hotels remain at below 50% occupancy; consumer travel remains at an all-time low, with only a third of Americans saying they have traveled overnight for leisure or vacation since March; and urban hotels face collapse with “cripplingly” low occupancies. The study showed the pandemic has left hotels in major cities across the country struggling to stay in business, resulting in massive job losses. The association said that with hotels central to getting the economy back on track and supporting millions of jobs across the country, Congressional support is “urgently needed” to bring employees back, keep doors open and help hotels survive,  as a full recovery is “years away.”
