Wow Air has ceased operations. A message on the Icelandic airline’s website delivered the news, adding that all flights had been canceled. It was believed that thousands of passengers had been stranded by the collapse of the carrier. Wow Air advised stranded passengers that other airlines might offer reduced “rescue fares” in light of the circumstances. Wow started flying in 2012 and operated both short and long-haul routes, flying to Washington and Boston in the US. The failure comes after six months of negotiations in an attempt by Wow’s owners to sell it to its main rival Icelandair, and then to Indigo Partners, a US private equity firm that has stakes in several airlines, including Hungary’s Wizz Air. Indigo and Icelandair both walked away in recent days, leaving Wow Air scrambling for a financial restructuring with bondholders and other creditors.
