The US Department of Transportation has withdrawn two proposed rulemakings on airline ancillary revenues, saying they were “of limited public benefit.” The proposed measures had been generally supported by consumer groups and strongly opposed by most airlines. The proposed rule title “Reporting of Ancillary Airline Passenger Revenues, “would have collected detailed revenue information regarding fees imposed by large airlines – including fees on checked bags, seat selection, alcoholic beverages and more. The purpose was to make airline pricing more transparent to consumers and airline analysts, but the airlines contended it would do little to illuminate total pricing for travelers and would be an economic burden on them. The other rule would have required that baggage fee information be disclosed at the same time as fare and schedule information.
