United Airlines announced that effective immediately, MileagePlus award miles will no longer expire. They had previously expired after 18 months of no user account activity. Luc Bondar, vice president of loyalty and president of MileagePlus, said that the carrier wanted to demonstrate a long-term commitment to customers. He said more customers used miles to book award trips in 2018 than in any previous year. Delta has no expiration date on miles, though American Airlines miles continue to expire after 18 months. In the past, any activity on a MileagePlus account would extend the expiration date. That might include taking a flight, earning miles through a partner, spending on a co-branded credit card, booking award flights, using miles for purchase or buying or transferring miles. United claims to offer award travel to more destinations than any other US carrier, with service to more than 1,300 destinations through the airline itself and its Star Alliance partners.
