United Airlines has completed a $40 million project to improve the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security checkpoint experience at Newark Liberty International Airport’s Terminal C, where United’s hub operations for the New York City region are primarily based. According to United officials, the multi-year project provides travelers “more breathing room” as they head through security.
The first phase of the project was completed last October, with the introduction of new magnetic queuing equipment and redesigned passenger flow at the TSA checkpoint. United at that time also introduced what it called a “desperately needed” new section of floor space near the TSA Pre-Check lane to improve the flow of foot traffic, decrease congestion and add additional queuing space. Now, with all the construction complete, United said the airline has grown the active checkpoint square footage by 50 percent, critical because United’s annual passenger count at EWR has grown by more than 40 percent over the past four years.
