Southwest has become the first carrier to extend its cancellation of the Boeing 737 Max into 2020, at the same time making schedule and gateway changes to deal with the effects of not being able to fly the aircraft. The carrier, which has more 737 Max’s in its fleet than any other airline, said it will not fly the plane until at least Jan. 5. Partly as a result, Southwest is pulling out of Newark-Liberty International Airport and will consolidate its New York City operations solely at LaGuardia Airport. It will stop operating out of Newark on Nov. 3. Southwest has 20 daily departures from Newark to 10 cities including Baltimore, Chicago, Denver and Phoenix. Affected travelers will be rebooked or can receive a refund. In an earnings release, the carrier said it is “taking necessary steps to mitigate damages and optimize our aircraft and resources.”
