American Airlines will include both a personal item and a carry-on bag in its Basic Economy fare beginning Sept. 5. All passengers flying in the main cabin will have the same carry-on allowance. The move was in response to competitors, as Delta Air Lines already allows passengers buying Basic Economy tickets to bring a free carry-on. Doug Parker, CEO, said on an earnings conference call that the change is designed to allow the airline to “become more competitive.” He said the carrier had put the product out with a “slightly different model” than others had done in the past, adding, “We think the right thing to do is to get in line with the competition.” Robert Ison, president, said that revenue from the fare had fallen short of expectations. United Airlines continues to prohibit carry-ons for passengers paying its cheapest fare.
