Alaska Airlines announced a commitment and road map to reduce the company’s carbon emissions to net-zero by 2040, and made additional commitments across carbon, waste and water impacts by 2025. The road map to 2040 includes five focus areas: fleet renewal, operational efficiency, sustainable aviation fuel, novel propulsion and carbon offsetting. According to the airline, novel propulsion supports electrification technology for regional flying that is either not dependent on fossil fuels or more efficient than current methods. In an announcement, the carrier said that together with its regional subsidiary Horizon Air, it identified the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions as the company's most important opportunity for environmental action. The company also announced five-year goals to reduce waste through more sustainable packaging and restarting inflight recycling post-COVID, while offsetting 100% of its operational water use through investments in high-quality habitat projects. As a result of its 2040 net-zero emissions strategy, Alaska signed onto The Climate Pledge, a commitment to achieving net-zero carbon 10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement goal.
