Airbnb will acquire HotelTonight, the hotel booking service focused on last-minute trips. The move is part of the company’s expansion into the hotel space. Airbnb claims that more than 400,000 companies are now using its service to help manage their travel, and that same-day bookings are doubling every year. Sam Shank, co-founder and CEO of HotelTonight, said the deal gives guests more choices and “the world’s best boutique and independent hotels a genuine partner to connect them with those guests.” In the announcement, Airbnb said that the acquisition accelerates the company becoming an end-to-end travel platform that serves everyone; meets growing demand for boutique hotels; and helps home hosts by bringing more travelers into the Airbnb environment. Once the acquisition is complete, Shank will remain with the company and the HotelTonight app and website will continue to operate as they do today.
